Understanding Thai energy law

Foreign rules don't fit Thailand — so we get it right from the start

Thailand's grid and energy law have their own specifics — from the MEA/PEA split to BOI's newly-changed conditions. Choose what you need to know by usage type.

Utility

MEA or PEA by area

Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan are served by MEA; the rest of the country by PEA. We file according to your area.

Meter

Second circuit / second meter

A typical home has a 1-phase 15(45)A meter — too small for a 32A EV charger. Upgrade to 30(100)A or add a dedicated second meter for charging.

Safety

Installation standards

Work must be done by qualified technicians with RCD Type B protection (AC and DC), proper grounding, and utility inspection before the meter change.

Solar

ERC license exemption

Rooftop solar needs grid connection and an ERC license-exemption filing. Today the utility forwards it to the ERC for you, cutting steps.

Tax

Deduct up to ฿200,000

Individuals can deduct rooftop-solar cost from income tax per Revenue Department rules, with a valid e-Tax Invoice from the installer.

Tariff

Choose the TOU tariff

A second meter can use the TOU (time-of-use) tariff, making off-peak night charging clearly cheaper.
